Abstract:
The Department of Archaeology and History of Art at the University of Athens houses a museum with an interesting pottery collection. This collection contains ten stamped amphora handles, which form the subject of this article. These ten handles have been donated to the Museum of the University, some with a very vague and others without any record of their provenance at all. Thus unfortunately their study cannot be connected with their find spot. However through a complete presentation they can be added to the growing corpus of the stamped amphora handles.Four of them are Rhodian (nrs. 1-4), three Knidian (nrs. 5-7), two “Corinthian B” - Corcyrean (nrs. 8-9) and one possibly Parian (nr. 10). The Rhodian handle nr. 1 displays also a secondary stamp with a lunar Σ . The Knidian handles are badly preserved but their stamps can be identified with certainty according to known examples (nr. 5 = KT 565, nr. 6 = KT 568, nr. 7 = KT 936).The following names, devices and Rhodian months show up on the handles of the Museum:Names: Άγαθόβουλος, Rh fab (nr. 3), ΔΑ (nr. 9), Διονύσιος, Kn ep (nrs. 5 and 7), ’Επιφανής, Kn fab (nr. 6), Ήρόφαντος, Kn ep (nr. 5), Καλλικράτης, Rh ep (nr. 1), Καρνεόδοτος, Kn ep (nr. 6), Κλεών (nr. 10), Λέων Λυδός, Kn fab (nr. 7), Μαρσύας, Rh fab (nr. 2), Πλούτος, Rh fab (nr. 4), ΦΡ (nr. 8)Devices: bee (nrs. 5 and 6), rose (nr. 1), wreath (nr. 7)Rhodian months: Άρταμίτιος (nr. 4), Δόλιος (nr. 2), Πάναμος (nr. 1)
