Abstract:
Plot 274 Excavation continued in three trenches in plot 274 in Nea Agathoupoli on the site of ancient Methone.I. Investigations in the subterranean space at the top of the hill reached a depth of about 8.50 m, again without locating the floor. The available evidence suggests that it was a storage space constructed at the end of the 8th c. BC, when the settlers from Eretria arrived. The abundant finds (pottery and evidence of various workshops) show that Methone with its safe harbour was an important transit and industrial centre.II. On the west slope of the hill the investigation of a large public complex dating to the Archaic and Classical period (Building A) progressed. The complex continues into the adjacent plot to the south.III. North of Building A another large building (B) was located, which continues into the adjacent plots to the north and the west. The size of the buildings, the plentiful evidence of workshop activity, and their position in the settlement suggest that they belong to Methone’s centre of commerce and production, the Agora.Plot 245This year trial investigations began in plot 245 in Nea Agathoupoli on the south edge of the ancient settlement, where surface evidence and the morphology of the ground indicated the probable site of the wall. The following finds were made: a pitheon of the Early Iron Age, a defensive fosse of the Early Iron Age, and a tunnel leading out of the settlement. Nothing remains of the wall, but a deep trench immediately to the south of it reinforced the site’s fortifications.Plot 208A trial trench in the north part of plot 208 located an ancient ground level (with Early Christian pottery) underlain by a stratum of sand. This proves that the area of Methone harbour had already been filled in Late Antiquity.
