Crossing the Pindos, third period (2004) : the border of Grevena prefecture

The paper sets out the basic premises underlying the University of Thessaly’s research programme «Crossing the Pindos: road network and defence» and presents the findings of the third period in the northern Pindos. The purpose of the investigation is to locate and study the ancient road network that linked Epiros with Macedonia and Thessaly and to map the defensive structures of all kinds that are scattered about the area in order to investigate and explain how road and fortification are interrelated.The third exploratory mission was carried out in the summer of 2004, being also the last in the northern Pindos and Macedonia, as the programme will now be moving on into the southern Pindos and Thessaly. The investigation concentrated on the borderland between the prefectures of Grevena, Ioannina, and Trikala. The routes of the two southernmost arteries, Nos. 5 and 6, were examined (see AEMTh 16, 2002), together with the local defence points (Katafiyi at Votonosi in the west and Petra/La Kiatr at Panayia/Nea Koutsoufliani/Libohovo, Trikala prefecture, in the east).
