Excavation of a classical cemetery near the new water-supply tank of Pentavryssos, Kastoria (2001-2004)

Abstract:
The discovery of the upper half of a marble grave relief dating around 400 B.C. (see Ergon, 1999) drew attention to the site of a classical cemetery on the hill where the new water - supply tank of Pen- tavrysos had just been built, 1000 m. east of the fore-mentioned village and near the road to neighboring Avgi. On the following year a brief surface survey conducted on the hill uncovered an even more unexpected find, the torso of an archaic marble sphinx, and proved the research potential of the site. The resulting small scale excavation has brought to light, up to now, eleven pit graves of adults, a larger cist grave and a grave marker bearing the inscription Μαχάτας / Λικκύρου. Although looted in antiquity, female graves still contained a number of bronze pieces of jewelry, such as double-pins and four engraved finger rings depicting a stag, a he-goat, a woman and Pan carrying his game. In male graves some iron knives, spearheads and a stringil were also uncovered. Furthermore, all graves contained at least one, or up to seven clay pots. Attic ones date from mid-fifth to late forth century B.C. and include some sherds of a Panathenaic-type, red figure amphora of late fifth century date. These pots are helpful in dating the coexisting local ones, which had remained practically unknown to us up to this point, but present an interesting variety in forms and techniques. The rarity of these grave finds for the district of Upper Macedonia as a whole, augmented by the prominence of the cemetery site (overlooking river Haliakmon and its surrounding plain), make our earlier hypothesis that we are close to the classical-times royal seat of Orestis, even more plausible.
