Abstract:
2002 saw the continuation of the excavations at Plotinopolis, Didymoteichon by the 19th Emphrea of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. The hypocaust bath was excavated. The sub-floor of square clay tiles was preserved almost intact but the under-floor columns (pilae) of circular fired bricks were not found. However, the impressions of the pilae were preserved on the tiled sub-floor. From this area came many wall fastenings in the form of clay spacer pins and iron clamps.Within the well shaft, excavation continued to a depth of 10,70 m but the bottom of the well has not yet been reached. The well shaft was lined with blocks of dressed stone to a depth of 7,50 m. It continued on down cut into the natural rock. Wherever it was needed to straighten the line of the well, crevices in the rock had been filled in with fired bricks and plaster or small dressed blocks of different shapes had been inserted. At the upper part of the well, dressed stone of regular shape had been used.In 2003 the entrance of the barrel-vaulted room was excavated. E and W of the entrance 2 walls were uncovered with a N/S orientation and between them were found steps leading down into the chamber. One descended these steps in order to draw water from the well (in the barrel vaulted room). The most impressive find was an ivory Erotes holding a cockerel in his right hand.
