Parallel Title:
Trial excavation on the Table at Gona : initial findings
Abstract:
Between October 2002 and April 2003 exploratory trenches· were dug in the area around the table at Gona near Thessaloniki’s Macedonia Airport, in advance of public works to widen the airport road. The investigation was carried out for the first time by the 16th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (an initial investigation had been conducted by the archaeological service of the French army during WWI) and focused on the site of the table, i.e. the settlement of the historical period which developed against the south side of the Bronze-Age mound after the latter had been abandoned. It was found that the table, the upper deposits of which had been destroyed by interventions in the modem era, had developed from at least as early as the 9th century BC and been inhabited until the Roman period. The pottery found in the area indicates that the site was used in the Middle and Late Byzantine period.A study of the abundant pottery showed that in the table’s earliest phases (9th c., 8th c., and first half of the 7th c. BC) it is mainly local, hand-made (undecorated, incised, burnished) ware typical of the Iron Age in central Macedonia, though there is also wheel-made pottery, painted and imported (mainly from Euboea), and local painted ware that imitates the imported pottery. In the second half of the 7th and early 6th century local painted ware with clear Ionian influences predominates. The later phases (from just before the mid-6th c.) have been destroyed, but scattered black-glazed sherds and other pottery of the 4th century BC and the Early Hellenistic period, as also terra sigillata wares of the Roman period, bear witness to the duration of the settlement’s life.
