Abstract:
An extensive Hellenistic coastal commercial centre dating to between the 4th century BC and the 1st century AD has been located in deeper layers of the palace complex built by Galerius. Workshops of the Late Hellenistic period have been excavated under the bed of the Galerian mosaic in the north stoa of the palace, in site Δ, between the Octagon and the Nymphaion, and directly beneath the mosaic floors of a Roman villa that has been located under the south stoa of the palace.Rubble masonry of the main Hellenistic phase (3rd-2nd cc. BC) has been located at deeper levels throughout the wider area. The area of the workshops was converted to residential use in the 1 st century AD, when luxurious Roman villas were built, like the luxurious spaces with frescoed spandrels, mosaics, and marble-incrusted floors that have been discovered directly under the Galerian mosaics in the south stoa of the palace. The main Roman phase burnt down in the mid-3rd century AD.Galerius selected the south-eastern coastal sector, which had been built up ever since the city was founded, for his palace complex, razing the ruined Roman phase.
