Abstract:
The present Gulf of Thessaloniki was an area of low relief and hilly terrain which was flooded after the Holocene sea level rise. The present shoreline is characterized by low profile depositional propagating coasts along the N-NW side of the Gulf (Aliakmon, Axios, Gallikos river deltas). However, along the east side, high profile erosional coasts appear as coastal terraces. Several coastal prehistoric and historic settlements were distributed in that area and were affected more or less by the retreating of the land.10.000 years ago the sea flooded the gulf forming a coastline at -30 m. This estimation was based apon the bathymetry of the present gulf, the thickness of the Holocene marine sediments, and a new curve of the sea level rise of Thessaloniki Gulf. Today, in the area of cape Megaio Emvolo, the -30 m coastline is situated 1.000 m offshore, between the depths of-22 and -26 m, and is covered with 5-8 m marine sediments.Mean Erosional Rates for the Holocene land retreat are estimated to 0.1 m/year (l.OOOm/lO.OOO years). Direct measurements of the coastal erosion during the last two decades in the same area indicate an annual erosion rate of 0.1 m/year, which coincides extremely well with the mean Holocene rate. The influence of such Erosional rates obviously was catastrophic for ancient coastal settlements (Aeneia) along cape Megaio Emvolo. At the same time, eroded coastal settlements of lesser degree appear in cape Mikro Emvolo. Coastal deposition and land propagation were observed only along the coastline of Anthemoundas valley.
