Abstract:
Since the 1980s three Early Christian basilicas and a subsidiary building with a wine-press have been located at Giazo-Tzortzi, 10 km north-west of Varvara. The three-aisled timber-roofed basilicas with galleries and narthex have no atrium, owing to the irregularity of the terrain. The monuments, especially their sculptural decoration, are provincial in style and, according to numismatic evidence, belong to a complex that was established in the 5th century. The complex was probably connected with a settlement, remnants of which can be seen in the area. Adjacent structures have not yet been explored, apart from a baptistery outside the west wall of the narthex of basilica I. During a later construction phase (possibly in the late 6th century), walls were built on the stylobates in basilicas I and III and only the nave was used, as was common practice in the architectural modification of Early Christian basilicas in the eastern Mediterranean.
