The sanctuary of Demeter at Dion

Abstract:
Demeter.A 26 m stretch of a wall that must belong to a stoa was uncovered 16.50 m east of the line of the sanctuary’s great altars. The stoa, which would have enclosed the sanctuary at the east end, was probably built in the Imperial period, and the wall was probably its stylobate. In the south section, investigations continued in a large building, of which three spaces have been uncovered so far, the most southerly of which is a public latrine. The building preserves evidence of three construction phases. From the first survives a long wall with five buttresses at approximately five-metre intervals; it probably belonged to a stoa of the Early Imperial period. The latrine and the middle space belong to the second phase, while the third is represented by the north and east wall at the north space, which are later additions. The latter two phases, which cannot have been far apart, are dated, mainly by coins, to the second half of the 2nd century and into the 3rd century AD. These two spaces must have been auxilliary rooms, possibly for processing and storing cereals, while the public latrine served the needs of those who spent time outside the walls, especially visitors to the nearby shrine of Asklepios. The proximity of the Asklepieion to the sanctuary of Demeter cannot be coincidental. The association of the cults of the two deities in other areas is attested both by written accounts and by archaeological data. An attempt to throw light on their connection at Dion too, since their proximity is a fact, led to the discovery of a conduit which carried water from the area of the temple of Asklepios to the public latrine and sections of three parallel walls running north-south to the east of the conduit. Their discovery at the end of the 2003 excavation season makes it essential to complete their excavation, so that we can ascertain their connection with the rest of the buildings in the two sanctuaries, and thus to a certain extent pre-ordains our future investigations.
