Abstract:
This paper presents in the first place some observations on the ways in which the topography of sanctuaries of Aphrodite and Eros in Athens is reflected in the iconography of these two deities mainly in Athenian architectural sculpture and votive reliefs of the second half of the fifth century B.C. A revival of this connection in the Hellenistic period is also briefly discussed. On the other hand the turning points in the iconography of Eros in Attic art of the fifth century B.C. are investigated. It is argued that iconographie changes may be due not only to historical circumstances and philosophical ideas in the Periclean Athens, but also to developments in cult. This phenomenon moreover elucidates the mutual influences between official Athenian art and private monuments such as vase-paintings.
