Abstract:
The paper outlines the rationale behind an on-going research programme run by the University of Thessaloniki, ‘Crossing the Pindos: Road Network and Defence’, and presents the findings to date. The aim of the programme is to locate and study the ancient network of roads which enabled access between Epiros, Macedonia, and Thessaly, and also to map the sites of the various defensive structures that are scattered about the region in order to investigate and explain the relationship between road and fortress. The second field trip was carried out in the summer of 2003. The investigations focused on the mountain routes in the south and south-west of Grevena prefecture, on the border with Thessaly. There are two important fortified settlements in this area: Petra Ziani (No. 9) at Monahiti and Katafiyi Kâllitheas (No. 10).
