The Colonisation of Thassos : a re-examination of the pottery of the early phases of the ancient city

The earliest stratigraphically recorded ceramic material we have from the ancient city of Thassos dates to the so-called precolonial period and comes from the excavation conducted some 40 years ago by P. Bernard in the Kokkinos plot. In the original publication, the material from the lowest levels of this section was dated to the 1st half of the 7th century BC. However, a re-examination of the pottery, conducted as part of an overall re-examination of the stratigraphy of the Kokkinos section, showed that the earliest ceramic finds date to the 2nd half of the 8th century BC. This dating is supported mainly by 3 fragments of imported skyphoi with suspended semicircles. Another category of pottery, which is represented by quite a large number of fragments from the lower levels of this section, and most of the products of which date to the 2nd half of the 8th century, is the northern-Greek Subprotogeometric amphoras. This category of pottery found on Thassos is characterised by its variety of shapes and decorative motifs. A few fragments of ‘silvered’ ware, which can also be dated to the 8th century, were found alongside the aforementioned categories in the section in the Kokkinos plot. Lastly, a large quantity of G2-3 pottery was found in the lower layers of the section, on which Bernard’s proposed dating to the 1st half of the 7th century BC was essentially based. More recent research shows, however, that production of this NE Aegean pottery too began at the end of the 8th century BC. So there can be no doubt that the earliest material from the Kokkinos section dates to the 2nd half of the 8th century BC.
