Abstract:
During the 2002 excavation period, investigations continued in stratigraphical section A.O. Three new building phases were discovered. The 2 earliest phases, which date to the Protogeometric period, yielded stretches of the stone foundations of (probably retaining) walls constructed with large rubblestones. These phases are dated by a fairly considerable amount of imported pottery of the Late Protogeometric phase, probably from Thessaly. It consists mainly of fragments of kantharoi with 2 zigzag bands around the rim. In the 3rd phase, uncovered last year, a wall terminating in an apse directly overlies the walls of the previous phase and, like them, is believed to be a retaining wall. Here were found quite a number of fragments of probably Thessalian kantharoi, the high rim of which is decorated with pendent semicircles. This phase has been dated to the Early Geometric period.Simultaneously with the investigations in section A.O on the upper table, a considerable amount of work was also carried out on the lower table last year, where we mainly re-examined the stratigraphy of the previously excavated sections. In section Δ13, we excavated a space in the S. part, directly to the S. of the brick wall uncovered in 1997, where the excavation had not been completed. Here we excavated a thick burnt layer belonging to the same phase as a destruction layer excavated in 1997 to the N. of the wall. It was ascertained that the floor of this phase with the thick destruction layer N. of the wall is 80 cm higher than the floor of the same phase S. of the wall. Excavation of the S. part of the destruction layer yielded a considerable quantity of local and imported (mainly Euboean) pottery. The dating of this phase to c. the mid-8th century BC, proposed in 1997, was confirmed during last year’s investigations.
