YMCA 2002-2003 : new data on extramural Thessaloniki
Abstract:
In the summer of 2002, the 16th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities undertook to supervise the excavation of the YMCA’s old ball courts, prior to the construction of a four-storey underground car park and a cultural and sports complex. The plot’s prime location (12,700 m2 outside the E city wall) suggested that it would yield antiquities of various periods. And indeed, the excavations, initially in preparation for building and then, until January 2003, for the purposes of archaeological investigation, produced some interesting findings for the history of the city.Evidence was recorded of successive marine flooding, which inundated the site in the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. The remains of a workshop complex of the Byzantine period (excavated by the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities) were unearthed on the site of the main car park. However, one very important piece of evidence relating to the historical topography of the area is the location of the ancient coastline, as well as the excavation of two pits, two stone-built wells, and part of a fragmentarily preserved building, all dating to the Early Hellenistic period.
