Abstract:
This study brings together all the known archaeological sites and monuments in Kilkis prefecture of the Early Christian, Byzantine, and Postbyzantine period, apart from the Postbyzantine basilicas. Extensive field studies throughout 2002 produced abundant new information about old and new archaeological sites, supplementing the existing data in the archives of the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. The monuments are grouped by type: churches, fortifications, archaeological sites (unidentified, unexcavated, located after the discovery of building remains, architectural members in situ or re-used, surface pottery, and coins), cemeteries, monasteries, and Postbyzantine baths, watermills, and bridges.Special mention is made of the Early Christian basilica at Koromilia investigated in 2002. It is a three-aisled basilica probably of the 6th century, 14.90 m wide with elevated stylobates. The E. end was excavated. It has a semicircular apse with a buttress on the axis. Parts of the floors survive paved with mosaic made of large marble tesserae forming dark lozenges on a white ground. Three pieces of columns and three Ionic capitals with coherent impost blocks from the S. colonnade were found fallen in situ.
