Abstract:
After 10 years of excavation in the prehistoric settlement on the Arhondiko tell, we can now offer a review of our work. First of all, our efforts to extend the excavation horizontally and uncover the settlement of the end of the Early Bronze Age to the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age are progressing well. The excavations of 2002 located the interior spaces of two more dwellings in sections O and M. Here too, as in the other houses (A-E), we have located clay structures and vessels.Excavation of the stratigraphical section on the S. slope proceeded with difficulty, because frequent rain had created a thick layer of mud. The question of the existence of Neolithic deposits remains unanswered, though Neolithic sherds were again recognised among those of the Early Bronze Age.As regards pottery, a study of the material shows that most of the vessels are mediumsized and large receptacles (lekanes, anaphoras, storage jars) and strikingly varied in their individual characteristics.A study of the small clay objects connected with weaving found that this was one of the fundamental domestic occupations in the settlement. One further goal now is to develop the site for visitors, to convert the archaeological find into a social product. And conditions are ripe at Arhondiko for this to be done.
