Abstract:
In 2002, excavations were conducted on 2 sites in the area of Mikri Sanda, Gala- novryssi and Kryoneri. Three well-preserved buildings were excavated at Galano- vryssi. The northernmost (building A) consists of 2 rooms measuring 6.80x5.00 and 6.50x6.00 m. Access between them was effected through an opening in the dividing wall, while the main entrance to the building is presumed to have been on the now ruined SE side. In the N. room was found a small hoard of 7 bronze coins in a small plain pot, which had been deposited in the floor near the dividing wall. Of the 6 recognisable coins in the hoard, 3 are of Philip II and 3 of Alexander III. Of the other 2 buildings, at least one was for storage. Another 2 small hoards of coins of Philip II and Alexander III were found at Galanovryssi. The excavation at Kryoneri brought to light antiquities from the prehistoric period to Late Antiquity. The earlier layers date to the beginning of the Early Iron Age, a phase to which large enclosure walls are dated, which probably served to protect the settlement from flooding. The best preserved building remains are at the top of the elevation on which the settlement is located. Here were found workrooms with 3 construction phases between the early 4th and the 3rd century BC and another dating to the Roman period. The closed, open, and semi-covered spaces are laid out between 2 large axial lines, as are the 3 piriform kilns. A large rectangular kiln dates to the Roman period. The area of the workshops contained numerous pits, some for refuse and some for extracting clay. The last human presence on the site is indicated by an extensive Late Roman cemetery (3rd-4th cc. BC).
