Abstract:
The display programme of the Aeane Archaeological Museum is organised around three parallel axes: 1) the historical development of ancient Aeane, capital of Elimiotis, one of the most powerful kingdoms of Upper Macedonia, and the wider area from prehistory to the Roman period; 2) the groups of finds uncovered by the various systematic excavations (the city, the cemeteries, the wider area) and the assemblages from rescue excavations; 3. everyday life and institutions in antiquity, as reflected in the archaeological finds. With regard to the historical development of Aeane and the wider area from prehistory to Roman times, some of the most important exhibits are considered to be the Late Bronze Age unit (15th-12th cc. BC) with Mycenaean finds and Matt-painted Ware, and the Archaic and Classical unit (6th-5th cc. BC), which fill a gap in the history of the Greeks of Upper Macedonia, because the finds reflect the arrival of the Doric Macedonian tribes, the presence of Mycenaeans, and ekistic development and political organisation from the 6th century onwards. In the light of these and other data of lasting relevance, which testify that the antiquities from Aeane have added a new dimension to the history of all of Macedonia, it is our aim, by displaying the finds, to highlight the educational aspect of the new museum, so that ordinary visitors, as well as scholars, will be able to understand and appreciate the new data and findings. A parallel aim is to make it a dynamic and diverse part of the local and the wider community, with educational programmes, lectures, symposia, conferences, and temporary exhibitions. The Aeane Museum’s display covers a total area of 975 mf and comprises finds from ancient Aeane and the surrounding area in 6 rooms, while the 7th is destined for temporary exhibitions of finds from Kozani prefecture:i) The historical identity of Upper Macedonia, Elimiotis, and Aeane; prehistoric finds.ii) The ancient city on Megali Rahi Hill.lii) Public and private life.iv) The cemeteries of the Archaic and Classical periods;v) Plastic art in the form of statues, stelas, and architectural members.vi) The cemeteries of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The museum’s exhibition space opened in October 2002, when the display in 2 rooms was complete, namely rooms A and B, respectively 153 m2 and 89 m2.The display is structured both chronologically and thematically. Its characteristics are:1) a scientific presentation of the finds, to meet the requirements of visiting specialists;2) the educational nature of the presentation, so that even the most unsuspecting visitor may be initiated into fundamental aspects of ancient history and culture.
