Abstract:
This paper explains the thinking behind the University of Thessaly’s on-going research programme “Crossing the Pindos: Road Network and Defence” and presents the findings to date. The point of the research is to trace and study the ancient road network that provided access between Epiros and Macedonia and Thessaly. Additionally it aims to chart the defensive structures of all kinds that are scattered through the area, with a view to investigating and explaining how the roads and the fortifications were linked. The research covers the area from the Mastorohoria around Konitsa and Zagori as far as Dzoumerka in the W. Pindos, and from Eptahori and Pendalofos, the Vlahohoria, and the Koupatsohoria around Grevena as far as Aspropotamos and the villages around Aryithea. The first exploratory mission was carried out this summer and focused on Grevena prefecture, where the mountain routes were investigated. Three principal routes and some secondary ones were mapped.New data were gleaned from on-the-spot inspections of the known fortifications in the area, and 3 more were located (Ayio-Lias near Prosvoro, Petra near Mes- solouri, and Paliokastro near Perivoli). The sites date to between the 2nd half of the 4th century BC and the Late Roman period. All the evidence indicates that the specific fortifications and the fortified settlements formed a defence network, primarily to control the passes into Epiros, the organisation of which we ascribe to Philip II.
