Abstract:
For the past three years, the 30th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities has been involved in the second phase of major rescue excavations made necessary by the large public works projects that in 2007 surpassed in scope anything we had previously experienced.Prionia, site of IvaniOngoing construction for the Egnatia Odos within the Prefecture of Grevena made it necessary from 2005 to carry out a rescue excavation at the site of Paliomonastiro, Prionia, in part of a Hellenistic settlement with two kilns and seven graves, and at the site of Ivani in the same village, also in a Hellenistic settlement, but with antiquities that belonged chiefly to the Archaic/Classical periods and the Late Bronze Age. The earlier era is attested by the appearance of Mycenaean pottery as well as handmade Macedonian mattpainted wares. Also belonging to this phase are a total of 18 pithoi and stone tools, spindle whorls, and loom-weights.Antiquities from the Archaic/Classical periods include areas with masses of clay, stone foundations, and two Archaic pit-style graves for young girls with rich grave gifts, as well as various small finds, primarily jewelry. An equally interesting find was that of the skeletons of eight animals, including three sheep/ goats and five dogs. Its characterization as a sacred site for the primeval worship of Artemis, as goddess of the hunt and Artemis Agrotera, seems likely. The llarion damWe continued rescue excavations with funding provided by the Public Power Corporation S.A. (ΔΕΗ A.E.), beginning in 2006 at five archaeological sites scheduled to be flooded in consequence of the construction of the new dam midway in the Haliakmon River’s course.1. Excavation at the site of Ktio Diporou, Municipality of Chasia. The remains of houses and a large, rectangular pottery kiln were discovered.2. Excavation at the site of Panagia Diporou, Municipality of Chasia. This was a settlement neighboring on the site of Ktio, and the two probably belonged to the same large settlement. The employement of both sites in earlier periods, including the Late Bronze, Iron, and Archaic ages, is attested by sporadic finds and handmade Macedonian/Doric pottery with matt-painted decoration. A cellar and pottery kiln, as well as five child burials, were discovered.3. Excavation at the site of Vromoneria Panagias, Municipality of Deskati. Both surface evidence and primarily, excavation proved that the area was inhabited during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The settlement remains include areas connected with daily life, and there is clear evidence for the presence of baths.4. Excavation at the site of Keramario Paliourias, Municipality of Deskati. We excavated parts of a large cemetery extending over two hills at this site. On the eastern hill, we found 30 graves of the Archaic and Classical periods, which with one exception had been disturbed and looted in antiquity. On the western hill, following excavation in 2006 of 33 graves chiefly datable to the 4th century B.C., this year we continued excavating and discovered another 39 graves, for a total of 102. On the western hill, from the total of 72 graves, only six were unlooted; these contained pottery, most of which came from local workshops, weapons, jewelry, and three bronze vases.5. Excavation at the site of Agia Kyriaki Paliourias, Municipality of Deskati. This was an area inhabited during the Neolithic period as well as the Bronze and Iron ages, with rather sparse remains due to destruction by cultivation as well as the use of the site for small residential units.
