Parallel Title:
Excavation at the sanctuary of Zeus Ammon in Kallithea of Chalcidice - 2007
Abstract:
The research concentrated in three areas, the balneum (bath), the temple and the monumental bases and the area of the water springs and the cave.BALNEUM: The plan of the balneum was completed in 2007. The central hall, a cistern, the pool, the changing rooms, and the entrance came to light this year. The excavation yielded many small finds, fragments of marble statues used to decorate the building, Roman pottery and tiles, antefixes and simas from its roofAccording to the excavation data, the balneum was built in the first half of the 2nd century A.D., underwent repairs a bit later in order to meet new needs, and at least its southern part was again repaired in the wake of damage probably caused by the Goth invasion in 269/8 A.D.COMPLEX OF THE TEMPLE AND THE MONUMENTAL BASES: The excavation in this area yielded the earlier buildings that existed in the area before the temple and the bases. This first phase dates to the first half of the 4th century B.C. and was not completed. Towards the end of the second half of the century, the temple and the monumental bases were built partly atop the earlier edifices. The excavation data did not provide evidence for a more accurate dating of the temple.THE AREA OF THE WATER SPRINGS AND THE CAVE: The excavation yielded many new finds in the area of the sanctuary of Dionysos.First it became clear that the monumental staircase continued deeper to the east and to the west it led to the upper terraces of the area, where an oikos of Dionysos probably existed.North of the staircase, a water mill of the vertical type dated to late antiquity was discovered. North of the mill, a fountain house of the first half of the 4th century B.C. came to light; it was destroyed during the reign of Antigonos Gonatas, probably at the same time the first destruction of the temple occurred, and was not re-used.
