Abstract:
Magnetic and resistance mapping were used to investigate the site that hosts the remnants of ancient Doriskos, near the river Evros in Thrace (N. Greece). An area of around 14,400 m2 was explored. The geophysical data were processed and then converted into gray scale images resembling the results that would have been reached had excavation taken place. In particular, the resistance anomalies show clear rectangular shapes that appeared closed in most cases. Also, long linear anomalies were detected. All these anomalies are joined in a way that gives the impression that the ruins of the ancient urban complex have been revealed. The geophysical findings were verified by limited trial excavation, a fact that leads to the conclusion that indeed the footprint of the ancient city is delineated by the geophysical maps.
