Abstract:
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki houses a large and varied collection of ancient sculpture from Macedonia and Thrace. A research project aiming at a comprehensive publication of this collection in the form of a scientific catalogue was started in 1989 by a group of three professors of classical archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki: G. Despinis, Th. Stefanidou- Tiveriou and Em. Voutiras. Permission for publication was granted with the help of the then Ephor of Antiquities Dr. I. Vokotopoulou. At a later time Prof. B. Schmidt-Dounas and a group of younger scholars became associated with the project. This is first attempt to produce a full and systematic catalogue of a major collection of ancient sculpture in Greece. To this date two volumes have been published (in 1997 and in 2003) and a third is in preparation. The photographic archive created in order to prepare for the publication of the catalogue of sculptures of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki contains files for some 1500 items. The files and the photographs of the archive were eventually digitized and an electronic database was created in order to enable easy access and use. This was achieved in collaboration with the Forschungsarchiv fur Antike Plastik of the University of Cologne, which has considerable experience in creating archaeological databases, especially of sculptures. The database of the sculptures of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki was designed to be entirely compatible with the German database Arachne of the Forschungsarchiv für Antike Plastik. The creation of archaeological databases that are fully compatible with each other is particularly important, since it ensures the development of unified standards for the presentation of archaeological material, the establishment of a common terminology, and the possibility of combining information from different sources.
