Thoughts and archaeological remarks on the occasion of the enchancement of the Evangelistria tomb complex
Abstract:
In the north part of the old Evangelistria cemetery an Early Christian tomb complex was revealed along with a corridor of a significant building, decorated with a mosaic floor a tomb chapel and a cistern.The funerary complex of Evangelistria is a monumental complex with multiple dimensions as it is a place of diachronic Christian worship and religious practices related with death and life after death, as an archaeological site of the Early Christian and Byzantine era, a historic site of the modem history and a garden of the contemporary city.Development of the 5000 m site included works of: clearance, stabilisation of architectural relics, creation of access points and pedestrian footpaths, fencing and cover of the protection of the mosaic as well as the creation of green zones. These works aim at promoting this Early Christian burial complex and raising the awareness of visitors concerning the particular nature of this interior space of a historical cemetery of recent centuries in Thessaloniki.Was discus in this paper our thoughts and archaeological observations which were conducted with the pretext of the intervention works in the funerary complex executed by the 9th Ephoreia of Byzantine Antiquities. These works were part of the project “Unknown Thessaloniki. Presentation of ten archaeological sites”.
