Excavations at ancient Aphytis

The 2006 excavation season saw the completion of the excavation on a plot (owned by A. Karayannios) situated in the southern section of the modern village of Athytos and within the cemetery of ancient Aphytis. Forty-seven graves were uncovered, together with an open space (probably an ancient road) and a small section of a large Hellenistic building.The graves, which lie in the western section of the building plot, date from between the late 6th-early 5th and the 4th cent. BC. They consist of poros limestone sarcophagi, pit- and cist-graves, and in situ cremations. Many of these, particularly the sarcophagi, contain a wealth of grave goods, such as Attic vases and metal vessels. In this part of the cemetery jewellery was also found (in the female graves), together with silver epistomia, strigils and figurines.In the eastern section of the plot, to which the ancient cemetery does not appear to have extended, a long, narrow open space was uncovered (probably an ancient road which facilitated access to the cemetery), along with the end of a Hellenistic building. During the Hellenistic era the road, after falling into disuse, was used as a refuse pit by a local cottage industry, which can probably be identified with the adjacent Hellenistic building, a small section of which was excavated.This is the first time that finds from the Hellenistic era have been unearthed at ancient Aphytis. Indeed, they were found outside the bounds of the Classical city. The fact that the scattered buildings that have so far been unearthed within the boundary of ancient Aphytis have not yielded any indications of habitation after the earthquake of the late 4th cent. BC may suggest that during the 3rd century most of the settlement was abandoned and its urban character was lost, while habitation continued mainly in the countryside around Aphytis, where farmsteads and workshops were already in existence.
