Anthropological data from the east cemetery of Amphipolis
Abstract:
This study concerns the preliminary findings of the osteological analysis of 186 graves from the E cemetery of Amphipolis, dating to between the Classical and Roman periods. Apart from the single burials, there were also a considerable number of multiple burials, mainly from the Classical and the Roman period, probably representing family graves. Regarding the demographic picture, a high level of mortality was noted in the 30-40 age-group, with a striking absence of newborns in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Regarding the death rate for the two sexes, in the Hellenistic and Roman periods the cemetery was used to the same extent for both sexes, while for the Classical period there is a notable preponderance of male burials. As far as the health of the ancient inhabitants of Amphipolis is concerned, an increased incidence of pathological lesions was noted between the Classical and the Roman period. These lesions are connected either with mechanical injuries to the musculoskeletal system or with the general physiological state of the body. A higher incidence of disease was noted in the men than in the women throughout the historical periods when the cemetery was used. Lastly, as far as diet is concerned, a low incidence of caries coupled with a high incidence of tartar, as is the case in Classical Amphipolis, is frequently attributable to relatively high meat consumption. The preliminary study of the anthropological material from the E cemetery of Amphipolis seems to have produced a wealth of data about questions relating, for instance, to the influence of the social and natural environment on people’s health, the division of labour between the sexes, and the consumption of different kinds of food.
