The excavation of two building plots on Profitis Ilias Hill at Valta (Kassandria) brought to light a Byzantine cemetery. Seventy-one graves were excavated on two to three successive levels. They were pit-graves, sometimes covered with clay or stone slabs, and the occupants were frequently surrounded by bricks or stones.The finds indicate that the cemetery was used between the 6th to 7th and the 15th century AD. It was probably not in continuous use, but the tradition of its use as a cemetery was maintained for ten centuries or so.
