An iron age cemetery in Oraiokastro, Thessaloniki prefecture

Between 1998 and 2000 two adjacent plots were excavated in the Palaiokastro disrict in the S of Oraiokastro, yielding part of an Iron Age cemetery. A total of 150 burials were investigated, most of them in pit-graves covered with large schist slabs. A few plain pit- graves were also found, and nine cremation burials in cinerary urns. One third of the burials involved babies, infants, and children. A few of the burials were furnished with grave goods, in the form of clay vessels and metal objects. Among the vessels the commonest shape is the phiale, with a few cups and a wheel-made cutaway oinochoe. The metal objects include iron and bronze jewellery, such as bracelets, finger-rings, earrings, fibulae, and pins, and iron dagger blades. Of special interest are the gilded bronze disks that were sewn onto some kind of head covering. The finds indicate that the excavated part of the cemetery must date to the 8th century BC. The settlement connected with the cemetery was probably on the Dautbali (or Oraiokastro A) tell, 500 m to the SE of the two plots.
