Abstract:
In 2000 and 2001, excavation continued in the S part of the Early Christian basilica at Byadoudi, revealing the presence of adjacent structures built as annexes along the S side of the church proper. At the NW is a rectangular chamber which served as a baptistery, with an externally square and internally cruciform font. At a later stage, probably when infant baptism was established, the arms of the cross were filled in, creating a square basin inside. The baptistery is adjoined to the E by another T-shaped or L-shaped chamber with an unknown original purpose. Two cisterns dug out of the floor at the N end show that it was later converted into a winery. The S part of this room yielded an underground barrel-vaulted tomb with murals inside depicting a large foliate Latin cross on each of the long walls. The murals are of outstanding quality and may be included in the sepulchral art of the Early Christian period of the cemeteries of Thessaloniki.
