Abstract:
In the past four years (1998-2001), excavations in the sanctuary of Demeter at Dion have uncovered a stoa of the Hellenistic period to the S of the sanctuary’s cult buildings. A 30 m stretch of the foundation of the back wall survives, as do six stone bases of the timber roof supports from the front colonnade. The building must have undergone an extensive conversion during a second phase, when the front was closed and transverse walls were built inside. The stoa was destroyed in the Roman period, because the W precinct of the temenos and another wall of the Roman period running N-S were built on its foundations. Also, the E section of the facade of the stoa was destroyed to build a workshop, two kilns from which have already been excavated. One is small and rectangular, the other, to the E of it, larger, of the same type, and at a later stage roughly converted to a circular shape. The kilns were used for firing building materials. The workshop must have manufactured products for general use in the city and the sanctuaries, and was probably built in the area late in the Imperial period, by which time the sanctuary had been reduced to its N section.
