Abstract:
Excavation of plot 951 began in 1995 and is already in its final stage. It is the most extensive excavation in the N cemetery of Pydna and naturally gives us a clear idea of its phases and also of the various uses to which the site has been put. There are widely spaced graves of the Early Iron Age; in the 5th century BC densely packed burials in the E part of the plot alongside Pydna’s coastal road; in the first half of the 4th century BC burials in the E part again; while in the second half of the 4th century BC the cemetery extended over the entire plot, apart from the middle of the S side. The burials stopped in the early years of the reign of Antigonus Gonatas, but we find a small number dating to the 2nd century BC and Late Antiquity in the NW section of the plot towards the top of the hill.Stretches of five ditches attributed to various besiegers of Pydna were investigated, as also a tunnel approximately 25 m long. A few finds of the Early Bronze Age were located, probably attesting habitation; while from the first half of the 4th century BC we found part of an andron with a not very well made mosaic floor, another room with a basement, and a considerable number of movable finds attributed to this habitation phase (coins, pottery, Corinthian tiles in the earthfill of the graves). There are also a few finds from Hellenistic habitation in the E section and from Late Antiquity towards the top of the hill. Lastly, channels and pits connected with viticulture in the middle of the S side.
