Abstract:
The rescue excavations carried out over four years by the 9th Inspectorate of Byzantine Antiquities in the areas of Platamonas and Neos Pandele'imonas in Pieria prefecture were completed in the spring of 2001. They ended with the discovery of 19 Late Roman limekilns and an Early Christian cemetery on a hill to the N of the Castle (“Cemetery Hill”). Also, seven limekilns were located and excavated at the foot of another hill 100 m N of Cemetery Hill. The limekilns are hewn out of the soft rock and consist of a firing chamber, in which the material was placed and heated, a channel to receive the residue of combustion, and an entrance with two successive openings and an antechamber giving access to the main part of the kiln. The kilns are dated by a hoard of 23 bronze coins found in the bottom of one of them to the second quarter of the 4th century (c. 347).Both the excavational data and the large quantity of lime produced suggest that the lime was probably used for building on a large scale in a new or developing city, such as Thessalonike in the time of Galerios. In 2000-1, a further 25 graves were excavated in the Early Christian cemetery, mostly pit-graves, with some tile-graves. Grave goods, where present, were mainly oil-lamps of the 5th-6th centuries, clay lekythia, and glass unguentaria.
