A new cist-grave with painted decoration from Pella

Abstract:
The cist-grave of the late 4th to early 3rd century BC which was unearthed on a building plot in the summer of 2001 in Pella is one of the largest cist-graves found to date. Its interesting painted decoration adds considerably to our knowledge of painting in Antiquity, especially as regards the choice of subject-matter and the problems associated with interpreting it in sepulchral monuments. The painter, who exhibits great skill in drawing figures and sensitive use of colour is an artist who can lay claim to an important place among practitioners of the art of painting when it was at its peak in Macedonia. The iconography of the grave may be associated with later representations of the Roman period which depict groups of intellectuals which, according to authorities who have studied them, are inspired by an original work of the Late Classical period. In the Pella wall painting we have the earliest known depictions of figures from the original composition, which was apparently known in strongly intellectual 4th-century BC Pella and depicted a group of philosophers. The occupant of the grave was probably a philosopher who had also been involved in astronomy, as the presence of the sphere suggests; though he may also have been a prominent figure in the city who supported the intellectual, and especially the philosophical, movement. The iconographical theme of the new grave, which is seen here for the first time in a sepulchral monument in Greece, confirms the high standard of cultural development in Pella, where philosophy and the sciences in general constituted the core of humanist learning in the Macedonian capital.
