Abstract:
In recent years, the 17th Inspectorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities has dug a number of trenches in the framework of rescue excavations in the prehistoric settlements at Yannitsa B, Ambelia, and Aravissos.Three trenches were dùg in the Neolithic settlement at Ambelia, which is 1.5 km NW of Yannitsa and occupies an area of 1.3 ha on a plateau on a long hill. They revealed parts of round pile dwellings from two habitation phases (5250-5000 BC). The test trenches and surface investigations on the site yielded 490 figurines, as well as abundant other Neolithic remains, such as pottery, tools, artefacts of various sizes and materials, bones, and seashells. The prehistoric settlement at Aravissos is about 10 km NW of Yannitsa. The material covers a surface area of 10 ha and spreads over a wide, low elevation. Owing to the abundant water from the Aravissos springs, the settlement had various forms, being at various times completely surrounded by dry land, on the edge of a lake, on the edge of a river, or surrounded by water. The excavations which focused on the SW section of the hill unearthed, in the successive deposits of the Late Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age, parts of dwellings in an extensive destruction fill that was rich in finds. The prehistoric settlement of Yannitsa B (6500-1900 BC) covers an area of 10 ha on the S edge of a wide low hill on the SE edge of the town. The excavation trench on the Drossos Γ plot (2001) yielded part of a large ditch (Fig. 2).The deep successive layers of the Upper Neolithic period on the Parissis plot (Fig. 2-2) yielded evidence of three habitation phases. The middle, most important, phase included the substratum, the floor, and the destruction fill of a group of three spaces, the core of which was a spacious structure measuring at least 8 x 8 m (Phot. 3). Inside the central dwelling were discovered ground-level storage chests and pits, heating devices, monochrome and painted vessels (Phot. 4) of various shapes and sizes, a number of stone and bone tools, figurines, and beads, and a large quantity of sling-bullets.Pronounced traces of circular movement on the bottom of a morphologically specific group of vessels (“fruit-bowls”) of the Upper Neolithic period point to the very early invention and use of stirrers (Fig. 5; Phot. 3).A small stone seal measuring 2.5x5.5 cm comes from the N wall of the rescue trench in the same plot. The seal was used as a mould and has three rows of engraved linear monograms on its inner, concave surface.
