The Apsalos-Aridaia road : excavation of the neolithic settlement at Grammi

Between March and August 2001, excavations continued in part of the Neolithic settlement N of Apsalos, Pella prefecture, in an effort to collect all the data before the site was filled in to make way for the new Apsalos-Aridaia road.At the N and S edges of the excavation, which extended over 64 trenches (Fig. 1), two ditches were uncovered, measuring 8 m wide at the surface and gradually reducing to 2.5 m wide, and 5.30 m and 4.60 m deep respectively. The deepest part of the ditches had gradually filled with a sandy deposit, on top of which was a layer of rubblestones in the N ditch and layers of roof-tile bedding in the S ditch (Fig. 3; Phot. 3), which must be regarded as remnants of the settlement’s ruined pile structures. The ditches are part of a moat, a structure already known from other Neolithic settlements in Greece and elsewhere, serving various purposes. In the case of Apsalos, the moat is believed to be connected with the water table, as is also indicated by the 4.1 m deep well that has also been uncovered.In the area between the ditches, six of the 28 excavation’s pits were investigated in 2001, yielding stone and bone tools, jewellery, and sherds of various vessels, as shown in photograph 7. A subterranean structure was also investigated (Figs. 5, 6; Phot. 5) and a grid of post-holes (Figs. 5, 6), which attest the use of above-ground and underground dwellings. The various excavation layers yielded a large number of finds of all kinds (Figs. 9, 10).Archaeobotanical and archaeozoological remains were also collected, and are briefly discussed in the reports by S. Vaiamoti and M. Eleftheriadou.
