Abstract:
In 2001, we completed the excavation in the area of the Apsalos junction in Pella prefecture, which had been necessitated by the scheduled construction of the Apsa- los-Aridaia road. Three graves of the Late Roman period were uncovered (Fig. 1, B, 1-3) in the S part of the junction, though the main excavation continued in the 850 m2 area (Fig. 1, A) where remnants of a probable Late Roman road and Bronze Age and Neolithic remains had been found in 2000. The site of the road with layers of various materials was found on the E boundary of the archaeological site (Fig. 2).During the investigation of the Bronze Age deposits (Fig. 3), two more refuse pits were located and investigated. The finds in photographs 3 and 4 are from a large pit N of the pottery kiln, which has been completely excavated. Two radio-dated samples, dating to 1680-1529 BC and 1428-1324 BC respectively, come from the same pit and the area N of the kiln.An important find from the Late Bronze Age is a round trench (Phot. 5) inside which were found remnants of roof-tile bedding together with relief architectural members (Phot. 6, 7, 8) and the kantharos in Fig. 4.The Neolithic fill located at the edges of the site (Fig. 2) yielded two pits and two trenches. Inside one of them, a post-hole and a storage structure with clay walls are connected with subterranean dwellings of this period. The most common pottery shape collected from the Neolithic deposits together with other kinds of finds is shown in Fig. 6.
