Dispilio 2001 : new evidence for a stone construction
Author:
Abstract:
During the last excavation period, a massive stone construction extending across the modem lake’s shoreline, with revealed length more than 90 m, has been revealed. Probably belongs to a period quite later than the neolithic lake-side settlement, possibly in the Early Iron Age (after 1100 B.C. according to the Macedonian chronological range). It seems to be a quite extended enclosure (?) surrounding possibly the settlement of that period, although, no occupational remains of the E.I.A. have been found so far.The main part of this construction consists of various morphological elements:a. a two-faced central axis of a lm width, comprising of deliberately and carefully laid stones in a linear arrangement and following a slightly curvilinear direction.b. a similarly extensive and adjacent to that axis part of irregularly but not accidentally and quite densely laid stones, which might served as a revetment for prohibiting the influx of the rising lake’s water and the subsequent flooding of the settlement, andc. a cyclical -pit like- area, and a long imprint on the soil, possibly delineating a specific area. This stone enclosure is regarded to serve mainly as a spatial organization means in direct relation to the wet environment. It’s morphological characteristics cannot support a possible defensive character as can be seen in several lake-side settlements of the Alpine region and elsewhere. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that this massive construction reflects a great amount of labor investment on behalf of a remarkably great manpower and consequently the necessary control and coordination of that communal work by an institutionalized mechanism of the community. Finally, a more ideological dimension could added to the construction’s significance, as a means of demarcation of the site and the ecological niche under exploitation.
