Parallel Title:
Late roman cemetery in the Sindos industrial quarter
Abstract:
The excavation of 3 building plots in Sindos in 1999 and 2000 uncovered part of the Late Roman cemetery. The excavation yielded 123 graves oriented E-W. Most are tile-graves, and there are also built graves, pit-graves, and jar burials. One impressive find was 5 large cist-graves, which were built with pebbles and lime mortar and were used for multiple burials. The grave goods consist of terracotta and glass vessels, oil lamps, bronze and iron jewellery, and bronze coins. All the finds date to the 4th century AD and have parallels in finds from Thessaloniki and the wider area and in finds from various other parts of the Balkans. The Late Roman cemetery lies to the E of the Archaic and Classical cemeteries of Sindos, in an area with no trace of earlier activity. That it was possible to use this new area was probably due to the fact that the bed of the Gallikos had shifted eastward.
