Excavation of a neolithic settlement at Thermi

Abstract:
In autumn 2000, systematic investigation began of the E part of the flat Neolithic settlement at Thermi, Thessaloniki prefecture. Although the investigation is still at a very early stage, some important structures have been located, which differ from the data produced by the previous excavation. More specifically, we located clusters of pits of various sizes and with various contents, which means that they probably served different purposes. Stone paving is used repeatedly, either to construct wide cavities or to seal older pits. The pottery places the settlement in the same chronological period as the earlier excavation did, i.e. in the early part of the New Neolithic. The excavation will continue in 2001.
