Abstract:
Our investigations this year were confined to the upper table of the ancient settlement and the excavation of trench A.O, which was dug next to trench A. Excavation of the new trench reached a depth of 4 m, stopping at Late Geometric layers which contained a relatively large quantity of Late Geometric Euboean pottery. We located brick walls with stone foundations for the first time in the Late Geometric layers in trench A.O. Of the phase representing the 7th and the 1st half of the 6th century BC, there survives part of a wall with stone foundations. The shallow depth of this fill suggests that the settlement probably diminished in size during this phase. The next layer dates to the 2nd half of the 6th century, and here we located the floor of a house that had been violently destroyed, together with a number of interesting household effects, such as a rectangular clay basin for cooking food in and an oval clay tray, probably for the same purpose. The next phase, which dates to the Late Archaic period, yielded stone structures, whose function we presume was connected with some sort of workshop. In the same period, quite a large refuse pit was dug, and mainly building materials were discarded in it. The surface layer was quite seriously disturbed, with pottery dating to the 6th—4th centuries BC.Alongside quite a large number of small bronze artefacts and quite a few stone tools, which came to light from the, mostly undisturbed, layers we excavated, there were large quantities of pottery. The amount and the quality of the imported pottery that was found alonside the local wares make it possible to date the latter and offer considerable assistance for the study of Geometric and Archaic local pottery production.
