Electoral changes in the social base of new PASOK : expansion of the electorate and loyalty breaches

Compared to previous elections, the latest Greek national elections (1996) presented quite a different voting pattern for the Socialist Party (PASOK), in terms of the social origin of the vote. Recent research suggests that middle class voters tend to offer PASOK larger support in the capital area. In this article, we expand the research to the nine biggest Greek urban centres. We perform a quantitative analysis, using contingency tables and log-linear models. The biggest cities, Athens and Thessaloniki, exhibit a somewhat different electoral behaviour compared to the rest.
