Abstract:
The development of the cemetery of Europos, a project funded by the 2nd Social Support Framework, was completed in 2000. The proposal to develop the site was prompted by the lack of any similar developed cemetery of this period illustrating the social stratification and standard of living of a typical provincial town, like Europos, during the period of Roman rule. One point in the proposal’s favour was the fact that the cemetery preserves above-ground structures directly connected with burial rites and practices. Pit-graves, cist- graves, and monumental barrel-vaulted tombs surrounded by stone walls have been uncovered in the cemetery. The development proposal included the construction of walkways giving access to the monuments, protective shelters over the more important ones to make them stand out on the flat site of Europos, and drainage shafts, and the planting of trees on the site which are endemic to the area.
