Arhondiko 2000 : a typological presentation and problems relating to the function of the clay structures

Abstract:
The type and the good condition of this year's finds at Arhondiko offered an opportunity to reconsider the excavational data relating to the clay structures. It is worth noting that there are over 100 of them. From the phase of the pile- dwellings on the E slope (2300-1900 BC), 83% of the structures are in quite good condition, which has given a better understanding of their form, their function, and their spatial organisation. Thus, during a preparatory stage of their study, an effort was made to distinguish typological groups on the basis of morphological and structural criteria. More specifically, 5 types were recognised.i) The ovens. Horseshoe-shaped, with a vaulted top and an opening in one, narrow, side, they were used for cooking food.ii) The platforms. They are characterised by a flat work surface and have no sides. They served as a kind of counter for food preparation.iii) The large, round structures. They have vertical sides and a diameter of 1—1.5 m. They must have served storage needs {siroi).iv) The small, round structures. The same shape as the larger structures, these have a smaller diameter (0.40-0.60 m). They are probably hearths and/or storage structures.v) The composite structures. These vary in shape and are represented by very few examples. Their function remains unclear for the time being. An analysis of the spatial distribution of the clay structures shows that they are grouped in clusters scattered in various parts of the settlements. They are frequently surrounded by entire vessels, millstones, loom weights, and a variety of implements. The clusters seem to be connected with oblong houses oriented NW-SE.
