Abstract:
The excavation of the site at Kastri near Polyneri, Grevena prefecture, continued for the 3rd year. Following the discovery of the temple in 1999, this year’s efforts produced important results, yielding the foundations and numerous architectural members (mainly Doric columns) of a Doric stoa at the SE of the temple. To the E of the stoa and facing the temple, we began to uncover the foundations of a large building. Its form and function are still unclear, but its monumental character is obvious. The organisation of the site which these buildings occupy on this broad plateau on Kastri Hill, as also its fortifications, which have begun to emerge, reveal how important the site was, even in the 4th century, to which the buildings and the fortification belong. This was probably an important sanctuary in the fortified acropolis of the unknown ancient city which occupied this site. The continuing archaeological investigations at Kastri will certainly furnish the necessary information about this Tymphaian city.
