Abstract:
In 1999, the excavation was completed of the narthex and the W end of the aisles of the basilica, and the narthex of the small Middle Byzantine church. The mosaic floor of the narthex of the basilica was completely ruined, because in the Dark Ages, after the basilica had been destroyed, the site was turned into a cemetery. Two residential areas were built in the N and S sections of the narthex in the Middle Byzantine period. The wall dividing the narthex from the naos was also ruined, owing to the fact that tombs had been constructed within its thickness and it had been plundered for building materials in the Middle Byzantine period. At the W end of the S aisle and the nave were found parts of the mosaic floors, which constitute an exceptional decor with clear N African and Mediterranean influences. In the Middle Byzantine period, the W end of the N aisle was occupied by a deposit, the pottery from which represents all the known types of Middle Byzantine ceramics. In the narthex of the little church, both inside and outside the Middle Byzantine buildings, numerous Middle Byzantine graves were excavated, which had succeeded those of the Dark Ages.
