Abstract:
Our scanty knowledge of the ancient topography of the Thessaloniki Acropolis is being supplemented by the rescue excavations that have been carried out in recent years in the locality. In 1998 and 1999, the 9th Directorate of Byzantine Antiquities excavated the site at 25, Arahthou St. and the adjoining sites in Konstandopoulou St. and at 3, Dzahila St. in the N part of the Acropolis, S of Eptapyrgion. The excavations yielded cisterns and conduits, an Early Christian basilica, burials of the Early and Late Byzantine periods, and structures that are probably connected with workshops. Three cisterns located in all 3 sites belong to the Early Christian period. The 2 larger ones must have been connected with the water network that supplied the E of the city with water from Hortiatis. An Early Christian basilica with a semicircular apse at the E end was excavated in the plots in Konstandopoulou St. and at 3, Dzahila St. It survives at foundation level. The naos is 16 m long and the nave 6.50 m wide, twice as wide as the aisles. Among the ruins of the church were found scattered graves of the Early Byzantine period, and an organised burial complex was excavated at 25, Arahthou St. consisting of 5 built barrel- vaulted graves of the Late Byzantine period, which may be connected with one of the monasteries which, the sources tell us, existed in the area of the Acropolis. In the Late Byzantine period, 3 new cisterns were built on the sites in Konstandopoulou St. and at 3, Dzahila St., 2 of which were converted in the Middle Byzantine period probably into metal-smelting furnaces. Future excavations will shed light on the interesting question of the religious and other establishments in the Acropolis.
