Abstract:
Excavations began at ancient Stageira in 1990, in the framework of the ROP, bringing to light some noteworthy finds of technical, aesthetic, and interpretative interest. This paper was read at the 12th Archaeological Congress in 1998 (February 1999) and concerns the restoration and consolidation work carried out on the site. The work was carried out on the site, on the basis of Central Archaeological Council (KAS)-approved plans, by the 16th Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in areas threatened with collapse, such as the walls, the stoa, and the acropolis. The interventions in the wall concern the landward section, which is visible from the interior of Halkidiki. The plans for the work were drawn up on the basis of the monuments’ special features and involve: limiting the work to the essential consolidation interventions and small-scale restorations in order to i) forestall damage and collapse, and ii) partially restore the monuments’ image. The restorations used the same (ancient) construction system as the existing structures, to a height determined by the surviving sections, and with either authentic or modern materials, without aesthetic or chromatic differences. In order to accentuate certain parts of the site and to enable visitors to move around safely in these areas, special wooden structures were constructed, such as steps and boardwalks, which assist an interpretation of the site and do not affect the image of the surviving infrastructure.
