Excavation at ancient Aphyte

Parts of the Archaic and Classical cemetery of ancient Aphyte were uncovered on 2 building plots in Athytos. Most of the 21 graves were pit graves or cist graves. The oldest grave excavated dates to the mid-6th cent. BC, the most recent to the last couple of decades of the 5th cent. BC. The most important find was a Chian chalice of the mid-6th cent. BC, which was found with other finds in a cist grave.Fragmentary parts of houses of the Classical period were uncovered at 2 neighbouring points of the ancient city in the ne of the modem village. The houses were built with rubble stones. Rectangular hearths were found in 3 rooms. Rich layers of destruction fill were uncovered on the earthen floors of the rooms; they yielded an abundance of everyday objects and had fallen during a sudden disaster. Finds here included a number of jugs, small basins, pointed anaphoras, small unpainted and black-glazed vessels, clay loom weights, bronze coins, a stone pestle, a stone mortar, a stone cannonball, and a lead sling-bullet.The disaster which took place in the 4th cent. BC must have been due to an earthquake or a war. In the latter case, it could have been connected with the destruction of the cities of Chalkidike by Philip II in 348 BC.
