Arhondiko 1999
Abstract:
The main objective of the work carried out in the prehistoric settlement of Arhondiko in 1999 was to conduct a horizontal investigation of the pile- dwellings phase, which has been located in trenches dug in previous seasons on the east slope of the tell. This phase is dated to between 2300 and 1900 BC, i.e. the end of the Early Bronze Age and beginning of the Middle Bronze Age.Some of the trenches were excavated to a considerable depth and the baulks were removed in the area of the pile-dwellings in order to unify the site and help resolve questions relating to the spatial organisation of the settlement, which is also the main object of inquiry. The picture of the settlement to date was enriched by new architectural remains of pile-dwellings, which are connected with fragmentary floors, pits, and a large number of clay structures of various types, many of them arranged in clusters. The household effects of these dwellings have been supplemented by a large number of small finds, mainly weaving tools, and by entire vessels (mostly small amphoras with elevated handles), which were found either in the destruction fill or directly on floors. A new grave of a small crouched child, without burial offerings, furnishes further information about the burial practices of the inhabitants of Arhondiko.
